One of my most cherished experiences during residency was watching the turtles in the pond nestled between the hospital buildings. I shared techniques with patients and colleagues on how to find them—their little heads peek out the water, and they commune on logs. One turtle was big with a remarkably red hue that mirrored neighboring stones. They are fascinating prehistoric reptiles whose simplicity and discretion inspire wisdom.
One of the most iconic traits of a turtle is its shell. Turtles amble around with solid exteriors and move at their own pace. If threatened they retreat into their homes which they must carry everywhere they go.
As a forever trainee who relocates frequently, I learned a bit about homes. It is not defined by a place and doesn’t have to be bound by roles or familial structures. Unlike many people, turtles are not searching for a home. They are a home.
Your home should be wherever you are. It is something you get to build based on an understanding of yourself.

If there is a log in a pond in a swampy region, turtles will be there. Not just one, but several. They commune together to bask in the sun and get their Vitamin D. Their affinity for community and the sun speaks to core life principles. We need the sun, and we need community. They enrich and support us.
Get outside and get your Vitamin D. Rest with others in nature to feel energized and refreshed. Wisdom persists in the behavior of turtles. Some of your issues may be resolved if you rest, spend time with others, and prioritize nourishing activities like turtles.
Turtles have a reputation for being slow. On land, they carefully measure each step. They are out there living long, low-stress lives in their tough shells that deter predators. How many of us allow external stressors past our shells to detract from our lives? How many of us rush into situations we are unprepared for? While turtles are thriving at their own pace, we have consumed societal timescales and threats that detract from our quality of life.
Slow down and allow yourself time and mental clarity to experience a fulfilling life.

What have you heard a turtle say? Probably nothing. They may make sounds but primarily use head movements and even vibrations to communicate. Their expertise in the nonverbal teaches that it is often not what you say that matters; it is how you move that speaks volumes. Hone your nonverbal communication. That means ensuring your actions align with your values.
Finally, turtles can survive extended periods without food or water. During harsh seasons, they buckle down and show off their resilience.
Everyone has harsh seasons. What matters is how we navigate them. Do we tap into intrinsic strength and adapt or find comfort in defeat? Turtles, as excellent navigators, are directing us to adaptability and perseverance. They are symbols of longevity and contentment. Watch how turtles live to understand the habits that keep them steady.
Over the years my fascination with turtles has only grown. They move quietly but their lives speak loudly. We think they are slow, but they get where they are going while preserving their energy for what matters. There is much we can learn from turtles.
